Around the world, hundreds of millions of people do not have soap and clean water to wash their hands with. The basic practice of handwashing is essential in preventing the spread of disease.
Despite the proven benefits of handwashing with soap, hygiene promotion remains neglected, but we’re trying to change that!
Here’s what we’re doing to ensure that people have clean (and happy) hands around the world!
- Plan International UK raises awareness about the importance of handwashing and provides training on how and when people should wash their hands.
- We support the construction of handwashing facilities in schools and health clinics where disease transmission is particularly common.
- We are working with communities to develop low-cost handwashing options for use at the community and household level.
Through these activities, we’re making a big impact!
In Cambodia, we have helped 372,000 people gain access to handwashing facilities.
In Indonesia, we have helped 157,336 people gain access to handwashing facilities in 2015.
In Malawi, we have helped 41,665 people gain access to handwashing facilities at home in 2015.
In Pakistan, we have helped 33,500 households gain access to handwashing facilities in 2015.
In Pakistan and Bangladesh, five million children have been reached with handwashing messages in primary schools over the past year.
Now that’s something to celebrate! Happy Global Handwashing Day!
Having access to clean water, safe toilets and the practice of handwashing with soap improves the lives of children and adolescent girls all over the world.
