Myanmar Earthquake Appeal

It’s a scary and confusing time for children in Myanmar following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake. They urgently need your attention and support.

The situation is still unfolding but many children have lost everything. Their homes, their schools – even their loved ones. Some are still searching for their family among the rubble. Alone and vulnerable, they are at risk of further harm and exploitation.

Plan International is ensuring children are protected in the aftermath of the Myanmar earthquake – especially girls who are often more vulnerable in times of crisis.

With your help we can provide more urgent life-saving items such as blankets, mosquito nets, shelter, clean drinking water and period dignity kits. We can also provide safe places for children to play and emotional support.

But we must act quickly. Please donate now.

What's happened in Myanmar?

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday 28 March. It caused widespread destruction, and tremors were even felt in neighbouring Thailand. A 5.5 magnitude aftershock followed on Sunday 30 March. Smaller aftershocks continue.

At least 1,700 people have been killed and hundreds remain missing. Homes, schools, hospitals, roads, water sources and communication lines have been badly damaged.

The earthquakes add to an already challenging situation in Myanmar after years of grappling with conflict. Getting to children in need challenging, but our teams and local partners are focused on reaching those they can urgently.

“Although a full picture of the damage is still emerging, most of us have never seen such destruction. Without a doubt, the humanitarian needs will be significant.”

Haider Yaqub, Country Director for Plan International in Myanmar.

Our response

Plan International is on the ground in Myanmar. In response to the earthquake, we are scaling up our work to prioritise life-saving needs, children's safety, protection, wellbeing and education.

Our teams have already reached hundreds of households in two evacuation camps to identify what they need. As part of the assessment, teams have also distributed 600 rehydration drinks, food, 150 blankets and 50 mini solar lamps. More relief items, including 500 dignity kits, are on the way.

With your help we can do more. Please donate today.

A girl-focused response

Girls in Myanmar face heightened risks and uncertainty in the aftermath of this crisis.

For example, girls who have been orphaned or separated from their families are at risk of violence, exploitation and trafficking. And girls within families who have lost their livelihoods risk being pulled out of school first to help make ends meet.

What’s more, damage to water sources and a lack of functioning shops means its challenging for girls and people who menstruate to manage their periods.

Plan International is working to identify the unique needs of girls in Myanmar and ensure they have what they need to stay safe and well.

*In the unlikely event that we raise more money than can be reasonably and efficiently spent for this appeal, any additional funds will be spent wherever the need is greatest.
