Response to new RSHE guidance
In response to the UK Government's new Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) guidance, Amelia Whitworth, Head of Policy, Campaigns and Youth at Plan International UK, says:
“We know that young people want and need far greater understanding about healthy relationships and sex. The UK Government’s new Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) guidance will hopefully provide that.
“Shockingly, just 17% of girls and young women feel boys and men are taught what they need to know about healthy relationships and sex. While 56% feel that better education to improve the attitudes and behaviour of boys and men would help women and girls feel safer and more protected. Clear content on challenging the misogynistic myths about women and relationships that are spread online is a welcome move.
“We’re especially pleased to see that the new guidance rejects strict age-restricted content, giving teachers the flexibility to educate pupils about their bodies and lives at the right time based on their evolving needs. Without this flexibility, there is a real risk of young people starting puberty or dealing with the challenges of being bullied without learning anything about how to navigate these experiences.
“We will continue to work as this guidance rolls out to ensure that it equips all young people with the knowledge and skills to be safe, free from coercion, violence and discrimination.”
