Stand in solidarity with Girls in Crisis

Stand in solidarity with Girls in Crisis

The coronavirus pandemic is having a devastating impact right across the world, but for the millions of girls already living through humanitarian disaster it has meant a crisis on top of a crisis.

These girls have seen a steep rise in food poverty, increases in sexual violence and major educational disruption, with 20 million predicted to never return to school. To meet the rights and needs of these girls, we need high quality UK aid now more than ever.

However, at this critical moment in history, the UK Government has re-organised how it will support the world’s poorest people, merging the Foreign Office and the Department for International Development. It is vital that this new department continues to take a lead on promoting equality for girls.

We must act now to ensure the new Government department listens to girls, especially those living through crisis, and continues to put girls at the heart of its global action.

That’s why, we are asking you to contact your local MP to call on the new Government department to seize this critical moment by setting out an ambitious vision which puts promoting equality for girls at its heart.

They are the experts in their own lives

At the beginning of the year we partnered with girls and young women living through crises – Congolese refugees in Rwanda, South Sudanese refugees in Northern Uganda and girls living in conflict-affected North East Nigeria. Each location represented a different experience of what it’s like to be a girl living through conflict, disaster or displacement. We now have an eight-point plan for change developed through youth-led focus group sessions, a vision outlining their demands for a better future.

The coronavirus pandemic makes this call to action more urgent than ever. With increases in gender-based violence, unpaid care burdens, and sexual exploitation – we know girls are bearing a significant brunt of this disaster. Now is the time to work together to ensure girls’ demands are heard and become a reality.
