We welcome the UK Government's focus on prevention to end violence against women and girls
Kathleen Spencer Chapman, Director of Influencing & External Affairs at Plan International UK, says:
“We strongly welcome the Government’s focus on prevention in its strategy to halve violence against women and girls.
“Violence limits girls’ horizons and silences their voices, and education is where we can stop this harm long before it takes root. Yet, many teachers have reported feeling unequipped to tackle misogyny in the classroom. Specialist training will be a vital step in giving teachers confidence to create spaces that prevent misogyny and to respond when incidents do occur. This alongside a dedicated helpline will equip young people with the skills to build healthy relationships of mutual trust and respect. On and offline, boys are being confronted with harmful ideas of masculinity, and we must not leave them to navigate this alone.
“As the Government publishes their full strategy we will continue to hold them to account to deliver on their commitments, which must include properly funding the work to guarantee genuine change.”
