We are one step closer towards decriminalising abortion in the UK
Kathleen Spencer Chapman, Director of Influencing and External Affairs at Plan International UK, says:
“Last night, the House of Lords voted decisively to end the criminalisation of abortions and protect telemedicine. This takes us one step closer to updating an archaic law from the 19th century that has created fear and confusion for women at moments when compassion is needed most.
“Whilst the amendment received majority backing, there were attempts to block this vital change. These are not isolated – they are part of a wider attack on women and girls’ rights gaining ground here in the UK and across the world.
"Until the decriminalisation of abortion passes, people in England and Wales still face the threat of prosecution and a jail sentence for ending their own pregnancies, including where they are only suspected of doing so.
“This is a reminder that equality is not inevitable, it is won and defended. We will not back down from keeping equality alive. Every woman and girl should have the freedom to decide if and when they have children. We should all be able to choose what our own futures look like.”
