Response to UK Government's recognition of Palestinian state

21st September 2025

Reacting to the UK Government’s decision to formally recognise a Palestinian state, Kathleen Spencer Chapman, Director of Influencing and External Affairs at global children’s charity Plan International UK said:

“The UK’s decision to recognise Palestine as a fully sovereign state is an important step towards ensuring every Palestinian child has their rights protected under international law and that Palestinians will have more freedom to decide their own destiny.

“However, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, state recognition alone from the Prime Minister is not nearly enough.

“We know from delivering aid into Gaza that the situation facing children has never been more catastrophic. A deliberately manufactured famine is placing every child at imminent risk of an agonising death from starvation. Countless sick children are going untreated as medical supplies run out, while almost every child we’ve spoken to has been forcibly displaced multiple times.

“The Government must pressure Israel to follow international humanitarian law and end their blockade of humanitarian supplies entering Gaza. We continue to urge the UK to immediately halt the sale of all arms, weapons parts, and ammunition that contribute to the suffering of Palestinian civilians, including children. The Government must act now to save lives.”
