Plan International UK partners with Indian Restaurant Chain Mowgli

11th December 2023

Global children’s charity, Plan International, has partnered with the renowned Indian street food restaurant chain Mowgli, to build two schools in India to help increase access to quality and inclusive education for children and girls throughout India.

Known for its authentic Indian dishes that are based on the founder’s family recipes, Mowgli currently operates at over 20 restaurants. The business was created with charitable giving as a central pillar, to enrich the lives of its employees and give back to the communities that the establishment belongs to and serves.

The Mowgli Trust was set up by founder, Nisha Katona MBE, to specifically raise funds for local charities within the cities she takes Mowgli to. Since the restaurant business opened in 2014, it has gone on to raise over £1.8million for both local and international charities.

Founder and CEO of Mowgli, Nisha Katona, said: “Mowgli exists for one purpose and that is, to enrich lives. Our partnership with Plan International does exactly that by bringing equality between boys and girls through the power of education. I’m particularly proud to do this by building schools in my matriarchal home town, Varanasi.”

Plan International is a global children’s charity striving for an equal world, where every child can reach their full potential and every girl can choose her own future. The charity was founded in 1937 and now works across more than 80 countries to build a future where every child is safe and receives an education.

Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive at Plan International UK, said: “Around the world, poverty, hunger and disasters mean millions of children are missing out on going to school – and girls are often the worst affected. That’s why we’re incredibly excited to be working with Mowgli to support children in India with access to inclusive, quality education so they can build brighter futures for themselves.”

The partnership will fund two new projects, based in Varanasi, India, and will seek to implement build work and infrastructure improvements in two government schools, whilst also focusing on teacher training and working towards positive behaviour change.

Mowgli aims to send up to 40 team members per year to their international projects across the globe, and the restaurant chain hopes team members will visit the schools in later years, to meet children, parents and teachers and see the impact the project has had on their community.

Through the Trust, Mowgli currently donates up to £600k a year to its carefully chosen charitable partners. Being able to grow this number each year motivates the restaurant business to take Mowgli to even more cities across the UK.
