Plan International UK announces new Chair

28th May 2025

Baroness Liz Sugg appointed as Chair of Trustees for global girls’ charity

Baroness Liz Sugg has been appointed as the new Chair of Trustees for global girls’ charity Plan International UK. She will take over from Sir Ian Diamond, who is stepping down after seven years.

Baroness Sugg is a Member of the House of Lords, where she specializes in foreign affairs, international development, and the health and rights of women and girls. Liz was previously Minister for Sustainable Development at the Department for International Development and at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Officer, and was appointed the UK’s first Special Envoy for Girls’ Education. She resigned her Ministerial role in 2020 following the decision to cut UK international development spending from 0.7% to 0.5%.

Liz has been a trustee at several charities, previously serving as Chair of Malaria No More UK, and as founding Chair of United Against Malnutrition and Hunger. As the new Chair of Plan International UK, she will be at the heart of the charity’s mission to advance children’s rights and equality for girls globally.

Baroness Sugg said: “Plan International UK's work towards a fairer world where every child can reach their full potential is more important than ever in these challenging times.

I'm delighted to be taking on the role of Chair. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and donors, Plan International UK does critical work to promote children’s rights and keep girls safe, in school, and protected in emergencies.

“I look forward to joining the team and our international partners to help ensure that our work is as impactful and effective as possible.”

Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive of Plan International UK, said: We are delighted to welcome Liz as our new Chair. Her vast experience in international development, along with her deep commitment to gender equality and children’s rights, will be invaluable as we continue our ambition to create a world where every child can thrive. I look forward to working with Baroness Sugg and the Board of Trustees to drive positive and lasting change."

Outgoing Chair Sir Ian Diamond said: “It has been an immense privilege to serve as Chair of Trustees for Plan International UK over the last seven years.

“Since taking up the post in 2018, the global context has changed immeasurably, but I have been continually inspired by the organisation’s unwavering commitment to advancing children’s rights and equality for girls across the globe. I am proud of all that we have achieved together, from strengthening our impact in communities to amplifying young voices on the international stage.

“As I step down, I do so with deep gratitude for the dedication of staff, partners, and my fellow trustees, and with great confidence in the continued strength and future of this vital organisation.”
