Gaza ceasefire: World Leaders must push for a permanent end to this nightmare

16th January 2025

Following the agreement of a Gaza ceasefire deal involving the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive of Plan International UK, said:

“We welcome the ceasefire agreed yesterday and implore world leaders to push for a permanent end to this horrifying violence. We also continue to call for the release of all remaining hostages, together with all Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces – including hundreds of children.

“The atrocities committed against the civilians of Gaza are a stain on the world’s conscience. Gaza’s children have endured more than any child should, and after more than 15 months of appalling violence, the youngest will never have known life without hunger, fear, and destruction. Leaders must put an end to this nightmare and use this opportunity to push for a permanent ceasefire combined with a massive influx of humanitarian aid. Gaza remains in the grip of a catastrophic hunger crisis, with children dying of starvation, dehydration and related diseases. Without immediate safe access and large-scale action, many thousands more could die.

“This has been a dark and distressing chapter in the modern history of our world, and we can only hope this is the beginning of its end. For Gaza’s children and their families, it cannot come soon enough.”

About Plan International UK

Plan International UK is a global children’s charity striving for an equal world. One where every child can reach their full potential and every girl can choose her own future.

Poverty, violence, and discrimination still hold back millions of children around the world. And it’s often girls that are most affected. That’s why ensuring girls get equal chances in life is at the heart of everything we do. We work across more than 80 countries to build a future where every child is safe and receives an education. A world where all girls are free from violence, in control of their own body, know their rights and have their voices heard.

And if disaster strikes, we’re there too. We work to protect children, keep them learning and help their communities recover.

But we don’t do it alone. To create lasting change, we work together with children, local communities, partners, and our supporters who believe a better future is possible. We won’t stop until we are all equal. www.plan-uk.org
