Educating girls to educate an entire nation
Margret lives in Sierra Leone, she joined our Girls’ Education Challenge programme after Ebola struck her community and took the lives of her husband and 10-year-old son. Despite her terrible tragedy, she is now a learning assistant, providing a brighter future to thousands of girls who like her, have faced many difficulties.
In Sierra Leone, just 12 per cent of teachers are female. This has a negative impact on girls’ attendance and learning in school. The lack of female role models reinforces low aspirations and confidence of girls.
Our programme works in collaboration with local partners to help over 21,000 girls stay in education after primary school.
