Girls and their communities in Venezuela urgently need help after two devastating earthquakes hit a minute apart. Details are still unfolding but it's clear the death toll is rising, and the crisis will turn young lives upside down.

Earthquakes can separate children from their families. Shatter girls’ everyday protection of home and the routine of school. Leave families with as little as the clothes on their backs.

Together with local partners Plan International is already responding and looking at what further support is needed. As in all crises, girls are likely to be disproportionately affected.

You can help provide life-saving essentials and ensure girls’ unique needs are not forgotten. From food items to period products. From emotional support to temporary spaces to learn. There’s no time to delay. If you can, please give today

“The humanitarian needs in Venezuela are beyond comprehension. In a matter of moments, children and their families have lost their homes and sense of safety. For those sleeping outside tonight without shelter, food or clean water, the next few days will be critical.”

Nick Radmore, Director of Fundraising for Plan International UK.

What happened in Venezuela?

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on 24 June, 39 seconds apart around 17:05 local time. The main quake measured 7.5 magnitude, with the epicentre in Yaracuy State.

Homes, schools, hospitals, roads, water sources and communications have been badly damaged. Rescue workers are searching for survivors under the rubble.

Because it was a national holiday, many families were at home. At least 164 people have died, hundreds are missing, and the toll is expected to rise.

Earthquakes like this turn children’s lives upside down in seconds, and in times of crisis girls are even more vulnerable. While the scale of the humanitarian impact is still emerging, girls and communities will need support.
