Statement on the closure of the Dubs programme

Following the closure of the Dubs programme of child refugee resettlement by the government, Tanya Barron, the CEO of Plan International UK, said:

“We are hugely disappointed to see the closure of the Dubs programme after allowing just 350 children to be resettled.

“A child has the same rights to safety and security whatever their circumstances, wherever they – and their family – may reside. The Dubs amendment was a recognition of that which spoke to the basic values and principles held by people in the UK: that we treat people, especially children, with compassion and help them when they are in need.

“2016 was a year of huge upheaval across the globe. Let’s not let 2017 become the year where we allow ourselves to close off and pull up the drawbridge.”
