Response to UK Government funding for girls’ education in emergencies

This is a statement in response to new funding from the UK Government for girls’ education in emergencies.

Tanya Barron, CEO of Plan International UK, said:

“We are delighted that the UK Government has pledged £90 million to the Education Cannot Wait Global Fund, again showing its commitment to championing girls’ rights internationally.

“This money will provide vital education to millions of girls whose lives have been torn apart by conflict and disaster. Right now, these girls are more likely to be married before the age of 18 than to finish school. Too often, their voices go unheard, so it’s hugely encouraging that the government have truly listened to their needs.

“We hope this will now pave the way for other international leaders and donors to act. Girls around the world need concrete commitments like this to ensure they have every possible chance to thrive.”
