Plan International UK backs climate strike ahead of UN Summit

As people around the world take to the streets ahead of the UN Climate Summit next week, Plan International UK has announced its support for the global climate strike and its call for urgent climate action.

Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive at Plan International UK, said: “Plan International UK stands with all those striking today in calling for urgent climate action from the world’s governments. It is inspiring to see so many young people coming together to demand their rights and hold leaders to account. It is also critical that their voices are heard. Their quality of life and that of future generations depends on the decisions we make now.

“When the world’s governments come together at the UN Climate Summit next week, the rights and vulnerabilities of children – and particularly girls – need to be top priority. Girls and young women are on the frontline of the climate crisis. When disaster strikes, their education is often the first thing that families sacrifice, while the economic impacts of climate change leave girls at greater risk of child marriage, exploitation and early pregnancy.

“Without action, the climate crisis could reverse the progress made on girls’ rights and gender equality around the world. To counter this, we need to make sure girls and women are included in decision making and that girls’ education is treated as one of the highest priorities. We must support girls to fight for the future they deserve.”
