Brighton man sets sights on world’s highest hotel for charity

A 75-year-old Brighton man will be trekking to the world’s highest hotel to raise money for global children’s charity Plan International UK.

Mike Williams has set his sights on visiting The Hotel Everest View, which stands at an altitude of 13,000 feet and sits above Namche in Nepal, the village closest to Everest base camp.  Mike says he will trek for around four days from Lukla before reaching the hotel, where he hopes to have some lunch before starting his descent.

Mike said: “This is the third time I will be trekking in Nepal. Six years ago I trekked to Everest base camp, but this time I decided to do something a little bit different and visit the world’s highest hotel.

“I’m enthusiastic and excited. This is something completely new to me. I’ve gone on lots of long walks to prepare for the journey; the only thing I can’t prepare for is the altitude.”

While in Nepal, Mike will also be visiting a child he’s sponsored for three years through Plan International UK.  Mike will meet 11-year-old Ramita-Kumari and learn about how the money he donates impacts her and her community.

Mike said: “I am excited about meeting Ramita-Kumari and her family and feel that I know a little about her already as we have written to each other for about three years.

“It will also be interesting to see firsthand how Plan International operates on the ground and to get a better idea of how my sponsorships helps.”

Plan International UK is celebrating its 80th birthday in March. Over the past eight decades, the charity has grown to support children in more than 51 countries, and more than 86,000 people in the UK now sponsor a child.

Money donated to Plan International UK through child sponsorship benefits children and their families. A donation of £19.50-a-month helps provide clean water, healthcare and education in communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Sponsors receive regular updates and photographs from their sponsored child and keep in touch by writing letters back.
