Thousands of families displaced in Nepal

"We could not sleep the whole night as our area was filled with water. The day time was also scary as the water level increased. We had no idea how we could be saved. When one of the walls fell down as a result of the rain, we started to worry even more."

Manisha, eight

After an emergency, with their homes damaged and a large number of schools closed or being used as evacuation centres, children are often at risk of being left on their own, without a safe place to go.

3.3 million people affected in Bangladesh

Flooding continues to devastate the northern districts of Bangladesh, affecting more than 3.3 million people. Schools remain closed and almost all village-level roads are still under water.

Our teams have responded by installing three water treatment plants in the Kurigram district and have distributed more than 5,000 litres of clean drinking water, reaching more than 3,500 people.

Homes and farmlands submerged in India

Monsoon floods have ravaged the states of Assam and Bihar in India, and authorities expect the situation to get worse as rivers continue to rise.

In Assam, we’re prioritising the distribution of clean drinking water, food, hygiene and education materials, and helping affected families to look after and support their children. We’re also setting up child-friendly spaces, providing much needed respite and support during times of distress.

“Access continues to be a challenge, as roads are blocked off, bridges have collapsed and telecommunication lines are down, but we are working as swiftly as possible to reach com-munities in dire need of support,” says Shreeram KC, Communications Manager for Plan International who is currently in Rautahat district in Nepal, an area heavily affected by the floods.

Update for child sponsors

We estimate that 6,040 sponsored children and their families have been impacted by the disaster, a number which could rise as we gain access to more affected communities.

If you sponsor a child in the area, we know you’ll be very concerned and keen to receive news from them. If we receive any information relating specifically to your sponsored child and their family, we’ll let you know personally.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or if you’d like to discuss our response efforts, please get in touch with our supporter relations team on 0300 777 9779 or [email protected]

Want to do something amazing?

By sponsoring a child, you can help us work with children and families in the long term. Sponsorship enables us to provide more ambitious projects, resulting in more effective and sustainable improvements to communities. These projects include building schools, digging wells, training teachers, providing vaccinations and teaching communities how to prepare for and survive disasters.

Child sponsorship is also an incredible experience for you. You can exchange letters and photos with your sponsored child, and see how your support is helping transform their life and the lives of those around them.
