Help end child marriage with a regular gift

Every 2 seconds a girl becomes a child bride. Girls as young as 12 are being told it’s an honour to marry. It is not an honour, its abuse. These young girls suffer violence, abuse and rape as a result of child marriage. What’s more, they’re taken out of school and denied the chance to make choices about their future.

Harmful practices like child marriage, female genital mutilation and violence against girls and women won’t go away overnight. Our Girls Fund supporters enable us to run long-term projects to empower girls at risk. From raising awareness of the real dangers of child marriage and FGM, to training teachers and providing school books so girls can stay in school, the fund helps to change young girls’ lives.

You can help. These vital projects can only run because of kind people like you. Will you become one of our Girls Fund supporters? You’ll help build safer communities that value girls and protect them from child marriage and other harmful practices. You’ll help them stay in school where they can learn and thrive. Vitally, you’ll help protect the rights of girls everywhere.

Escaping child marriage

“The people from Plan International came to our house and talked to my parents about the bad effects child marriage can have on girls like me. They also reminded them that child marriage is illegal."

Helping girls learn without fear

Around the world girls experience violence on their way to school. For them the daily commute to and from school may be terrifying.

Every child has the right to learn – education can help to build self-esteem, empower girls to become independent, earn a sustainable income and take control of their lives. One of the major barriers to girls’ successfully completing a quality education is the prevalence of sexual, physical or psychological violence in and around schools.

We support millions of girls to get the education they need, working to ensure free and equal access to quality, safe education so that all girls can learn without fear.

Kadia speaks out against FGM

Speaking out against FGM

12-year-old Kadia from Mali is speaking up for children’s rights by challenging village elders and encouraging discussion – and doing all she can to prevent any more girls experiencing FGM.

"It’s Plan International’s work which has given me all this knowledge and strength to be able to express myself in front of important people, even the village chief, to talk about my rights and such a taboo subject as FGM."
