The Rise of the Zika Virus: What We're Doing to Stop It

The Zika virus is a mosquito-bourne disease that has spread at an alarming rate across the Americas, affecting 23 countries and territories. The virus has been linked to an unusual number of babies born with unusually small heads which has raised global concern.

When children are born with unusually small heads, it may result in them not reaching their full development and potentially needing care and support for their entire lives.

The World Health Organisation has warned that the virus could affect as many as four million people. There is no vaccine or drug treatment for the virus itself, so tackling the virus is primarily a battle against mosquitoes.

Our work to stop the Zika virus

We’re responding to the virus in several countries including Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. We’re helping to reduce the number of new cases by focusing on prevention methods. Our work includes:

• public awareness campaigns to ensure members of the public are aware of ways they can protect themselves and reduce the risk and instances of mosquito bites 
• cleaning campaigns such as discarding empty buckets, bottles or tyres that retain empty water, which is a breeding source for mosquitos
• introducing fish to water containers to feed on mosquito larvae
• providing safe water containers
• conducting house inspections 
• providing homes and schools with mosquito prevention kits 
• training healthcare professionals on the mosquito control measures 
• providing health professionals with equipment for home visits including thermometers, portable detection kits and medicine for pain and fever.
