Letters that make us happy

International Day of Happiness – it’s a day to be happy! And what makes us happy here at Plan International UK is the children we work with and our sponsors who enable our sponsored children to go to school, drink safe water and have a brighter future. For 80 years, our sponsors have been making real change for some of the world's poorest children. So to brighten up a grey Monday morning, we thought we’d share some of that happiness.

Here, we’ve selected some of our favorite quotes our sponsored children from around the world have written to their sponsors – because there’s nothing quite as honest, imaginative, funny, and sometimes cheeky as a child’s mind.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the bad things in this world…

“I want to share a motto with you: No matter how many people want to slander you and how dark the world is, the only thing you should do is laughing because your teeth are always white. I hope you like this motto.” Wang, China

How to wake up and conquer the day…

“How I celebrate my birthday. I got up bright and early I brushed my teeth. They became as white as snow, I got into the bath room. I now felt fresh. I put on my dark blue suit. I looked on myself in the mirror, wow I was beautiful, outside the weather was bright and sunny. It was going to be a fantastic day” Joshua, Kenya

Our sponsored children tell us how to conquer the day

Life’s too short to wear boring accessories…

“My parents perforated my ears when I was very little and they tell me that I cried a little. I like to wear earrings with the figure of Peppa the little pork and with the figures of rabbits.” Maria, Nicaragua

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

“Am I really handsome? I was so amazed to learn that you display my photos in your kitchen. I hope it’s not too scary for the people to see it hehe :).” Angelo, Philippines

Food is the way to a boy's heart…

“My mother works in a family house and she leaves in the morning, my aunt Julia takes care of me and she likes to cook, that is why I look chubbier, she gives me food often.” Danny, Colombia

It’s never too late to do what you always wanted…

“I am proud of you because you are continuing to study although you are too old.” Hamzah, Indonesia

Different cultures make the world go round…

“Maybe we have culture difference between us. I didn’t eat birthday cake on my birthday. I ate long noodles cooked by my mum. Long noodle means longevity.” Chen, China

Things only grow until they’re perfect…

“By sending pictures, and letters our love will stay the same as will my height which is 4.3 inch.” Aadhya, India

Flattery gets you nowhere…

“My classmates envy me that I have a good granny, they say you are amiable and fashionable, I’m glad to hear of their praises.” Li, China
