Keeping girls in school

Thanks to work from the local government and Plan International, more than 2,000 families are benefitting from activities to help engage girls to stay in school and avoid the trappings of early marriage. Often, once a girl is married they are then expected to go out to earn a living for their family at just 14 or 15 years old.

Events and awareness campaigns have focussed on the value of education and promoting gender equality.

“Families do not believe that education provides much support or benefit. They cannot find work in the area and there are few jobs, so education seems meaningless,” a teacher explains.

Girl-friendly latrines have been built at the schools; girls’ clubs have been established; and female dormitories have been built. Some girls need to travel 5km to get to school and the harsh winters and monsoons can make it even more difficult for students to travel. The dormitories can encourage girls to stay in school for longer.

“The girls that do finish school are growing up to become local teachers, nurses and doctors,” explains their teacher. Through education girls can become role models for the next generation.
