Can you survive a disaster?
As the anniversary of the Nepal Earthquake approaches on the 25 April, we’re all too aware of the devastation disasters can cause. As soon as a disaster strikes a region where Plan International is working with communities, we respond by providing disaster relief to those affected vulnerable families. However, our emergency response work doesn’t stop there. We don’t just cover the immediate needs arising from a disaster; we also prepare communities for future disasters to reduce the potential loss of life and devastating impact upon their surroundings.
Two years on from the Nepal Earthquake that killed over 8,000 people and destroyed over 800,000 homes – we’re building earthquake-resistant schools in Nepal so children are better protected from future earthquakes and providing sustainable livelihoods to women so they are empowered to recover and rebuild their lives. We also run programmes across South East Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, regions prone to cyclones, landslides and heavy flooding, which gives children and their communities the knowledge and skills they need to best respond to and stay safe in a disaster. The practical lessons include emergency drills and training search and rescue teams.
We’ve put some of those practical lessons into a quiz. Have a go and see if you’ve got what it takes to survive a natural disaster!
