South Asia WASH Results Programme

A lack of clean drinking water, safe sanitation and good hygiene affects girls and women disproportionally throughout their lives. That’s why water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes are one of our top priorities at Plan International UK.

The first phase of our South Asia Wash Result Programme (SAWRP) reached 6.6 million people in Pakistan and Bangladesh between 2014 and 2018, enabling them to access improved water facilities, sanitation and hygiene. We are now expanding the programme to additional communities in Bangladesh until 2021, aiming to reach an additional 650,000 people.

As well as the construction of facilities and promotion of behaviour change, SAWRP includes a sustainability phase, enabling us to ensure communities continue to use their water and sanitation facilities and to practice positive hygiene behaviour, such as handwashing with soap at key times, to the end of the programme and beyond.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

SAWRP is delivered by a diverse group of NGOs, private sector actors and academic institutions, each bringing valuable skills and experience to the partnership. Led by Plan International UK, the first phase of the programme was delivered in partnership with WaterAid, Unilever, Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and Plan International.

Each organisation worked through national partner NGOs and local government institutions in Pakistan and Bangladesh and in close collaboration with other relevant local, regional and national government stakeholders. Ipsos MORI and Loughborough University (WEDC) supported the monitoring, verification and evaluation components of the programme.

The second phase of the programme in Bangladesh, again led by Plan International UK, is being implemented by WaterAid and Plan International with national partner NGOs and local government institutions, with Ipsos MORI and Loughborough University (WEDC) continuing to support the monitoring, verification and evaluation components.

Both phases of SAWRP are funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) under the multi-country DFID WASH Results Programme. The first phase contributed towards the UK Government’s target of reaching 60 million people with WASH initiatives to contribute towards the Millennium Development Goal 7, 'Ensuring environmental sustainability', by 2015.
